In 2018 we launched our Bermondsey Bothy, a permanent outdoor art workshop and residency site built by Scottish artist Bobby Niven (co-founder, Bothy Project) to host a Residency Programme for artists. This programme provides a unique environment in which we can support their development by providing longer gestation periods for the maturation of ideas and focused critical engagement.
For its pilot year in 2019, the Bermondsey Bothy Residency Programme commissioned poet Richard Scott and artist Holly Graham as part of a wider project concerning the Mayflower to mark and commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s journey from Rotherhithe via Plymouth to North America. The project continued in 2021 with Radio Anti and Habib Hajallie.
The project critically retraced the Mayflower story and examined its current resonances by addressing the themes of tolerance, migration, enterprises and community in a series of art commissions led by four artists working in poetry, art-making, film and radio broadcast.
The Bermondsey Bothy Residency Programme was launched in Autumn 2018 with Radio Anti, who researched language within the UK immigration process, working closely with young asylum seekers based in Southwark.
Bermondsey Bothy is generously supported by Cleaner Greener Safer programme run by Southwark Council, Southwark Council’s Culture Team, The Finnis Scott Foundation, Arts Council England, Conway and ROOFF.
